The Horrors Of Eating Disorders

You can’t seem to make up your mind, you eat and eat and then you hide a purge or you starve yourself for weeks until you are at the lowest weight that you have ever been in your life. Anorexia and bulimia used to be considered the health problems of some confused young girls with troubled lives real or perceived. Lately doctors have found that more and more women are being diagnosed with an eating disorder of some kind. Other misconceptions about eating disorders are that people think that they are psychological problems that can be treated with medication easily and then the person is cured for life. Neither is true. In fact, this disorder is not easily treated and the person is left to deal with it affects throughout their lives. Doctor’s believe that hormonal variations occurring near the menopause of a woman may be the reason the eating disorder developed such late in life.

These women see themselves as being overweight despite the fact that they are extremely thin. These women developing strange eating rituals or eat and regurgitating over and over again. Body dissatisfaction is the main focus of these women. For unknown reasons they can’t seem to become comfortable in their own skin. They often believe that their behaviors are secret and no one notices or cares enough to pay attention. The idea that middle-aged women are having this problem is troubling to physicians as they work hard to try and prevent the disorder in young women. However, doctors can’t be sure if the middle aged women that are receiving treatment are new to the disorder. The thought is that they had these problems when they were very young and as they got older realized that they should seek treatment. Complicating things is that these women are finding it difficult to locate proper treatment because for so long the focus was put on the younger woman. The women that are suffering from anorexia and/or bulimia many times suffer from perfectionism, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and anxiety. Substance abuse issues also many times play a role in many cases of both younger and older women. The most memorable and recent case occurred with a South American woman, a 24 year old teacher weighting only 77 pounds at 5 foot 2 inch tall when she passed away.

You or someone close to you might be suffering from this condition. It is a very harmful thing to suffer from, and if you suspect that someone is having trouble with an eating disorder then you should immediately take action to intervene. Do it in a graceful way so that the victim knows that you are looking out for her best interests. But don’t let it go on for any longer than it has to. Therapists are the most common way to deal with eating disorders, but there are also entire camps and seminars devoted to getting the victims back to regular eating habits.

The treatments include therapy, medication, and counseling and more counseling. Some others treatments tried are yoga. Studies have tried to link the two yoga and anorexia but studies were inconclusive and did not produce any significant changes in behavior or eating habits. Dissonance –based therapy which works as therapy and counseling aimed at the person’s competing ideas. There are group meetings and other more intensive therapies for those with severely dangerous cases of anorexia and/or bulimia. Many women have been able to make positive life changes to battle their self inflicted disorder and go on to live healthier lives. It has been reported that these women will have to battle the urges and cravings to purge or starve themselves for the rest of their lives. Since no cures exist for this disorder it is the hope of therapist and people suffering anorexia and/or bulimia, that some kind of definitive preventive measures can be developed or found.

Staying Fit On The Go

Just because you are a busy person with lots to do everyday, it doesn’t mean that you don’t have time to stay fit and keep in shape while traveling. Excuses do not keep you fit and in shape and able to keep up with the demands of your busy life. If you are a member of a health club it would benefit you greatly if you ask the club if it participates in any programs that offer privileges at other facilities. Guest passes to certain spa and athletic clubs are sometimes free for one day. If your hotel does not have arrangements with a club near your hotel, the hotel that you are staying at just might. Asking at the front desk may open your eyes to many possibilities for a workout away from home and you will find out exactly what your options really are. Lots of hotels at least have treadmills or similar machines, which are much better than simply laying in bed and watching TV during your stay. When traveling just remember that almost every town has a YMCA or YWCA. Locate the yellow pages in your hotel room and give them a call. Again, there is now no excuse to become a traveling couch potato. Opportunities for you to take care of your fitness needs abound in all of your business and personal travels.

If necessary you may need to get a little creative, by using your hotel room as the gym of the day. Exercising in your hotel room is an easily and very convenient way to make certain that you get in your work out without missing a beat. Before you leave for your trip pack some collapsible hand weights or elastic exercise bands or other equipment that is made for travel, and turn your hotel room into the indoor gym that it has the potential to be. Elastic bands are great for getting resistance without lugging around big old dumbbells everywhere you go. Use the chairs and other pieces of furniture to your advantage to satisfy all of your fitness needs. Body weight exercises are enough for a great workout. Combine crunches, pushups, and legups. You won’t exercise a large variety of muscles using only body weight, but you will at least be able to work on your heart and your endurance.

We understand that working out is not as easily done when you are in route to your next destination, so if your time is extremely tight and you don’t have time for a complete work out. There are other alternatives to not working out at all. Stretch in your room, take a long walk. I bet the hotel is just as nice on the other side of the pool. Speaking of pool, you could always take a swim. Swimming is definitely a workout that will work every muscle in your body. With all of these ideas for a good work out, if not the best work out that you’ve ever had, you should no longer have any excuse for not continuing your fitness routine while traveling. Just remember that it doesn’t really matter where you are when you do your work out but that you do your work out where you are. And if you can’t do the exact routine that you are useful, just take solace in the fact that you are getting a workout.

Garlic - The Secret Healing Food

This is a good article I'm sharing..

Not only the staple ingredient of many culinary dishes but garlic also has many health benefits. Here we look at the origins of garlic what are it's key healing properties and what health benefits it can provide to you.

The tern garlic is originally derived from the Anglo-Saxon word meaning 'Spear Leak' which is recognised from those times as the 'Spear Plant' in light of its resemblance to pointed leaves. The use of garlic has been shown to help reduce the risk of heart disease and lower peoples blood pressure and cholesterol levels. It also helps to ward off colds and flu by acting as an antiseptic destroying bacteria along with viral and fungal infections.

The dominant ingredient in garlic is a compound named allicin which is released from the bulb when it is cut or crushed. In the late 19th century amid many cases of infectious fever, garlic was identified as providing significant antibacterial effects. Medical practitioners of the time identified that English religious leaders contracted the infectious fever but the French leaders who consumed amounts of garlic in their diet remained healthy.

Other benefits provided by garlic include an excellent and natural insect repellent given the presence of compound within the garlic bulb which mosquitoes and the majority of bugs dislike.

Consuming only one garlic clove each day will ensure your bodys levels of vitamins A,B and C are maintained and ongoing research has begun to suggest that consuming a regular amount of garlic can help protect against certain stomach cancers. The early research suggests that the allicin compound can help to prevent potential cancerous changes within the stomach walls.

Garlic has strong antibiotic features and is therefore widely regarded as a good ingredient to ward off colds and influenza. Not only basic colds, but it has also shown to offer protection against viral, fungal, and bacterial infections. Further healing properties include a natural decongestant which can assist people suffering from respiratory problems.

It seems clear, that for just a small amount of garlic each and every day, you can provide yourself with significant health boosting effects with virtually no side-effects (other than the aroma it gives off!).

Diabetes Healing Foods - Important Things You Need To Know - Part I

This is a good article I'm sharing..

Our foods affect our blood sugar levels. No wonder that these days people are crazy searching for the diabetes healing foods. And this is nothing new. Earlier people would go crazy over the high-fat-low-carb diet recommended by Dr. Atkins. What people don't realize is that living a healthy life has nothing to do with counting calories or carbohydrates. It is more important to exercise moderation over what we eat. The root cause of diabetes is basically linked to over-eating. If we eat moderately, we have nothing else to worry. In this article I will tell you about how moderate eating can help you in getting rid of diabetes.

Let me point out another thing. The incidence of diabetes cases has increased to an astronomical amount during the recent years, and the reason is not hard to guess. More and more people are taking up corporate jobs, or surfing the internet for hours. These people are living a sedentary lifestyle, where there is little or no physical activity. Lack of physical activity causes obesity, which is often touted as the harbinger of diabetes and other ailments. If we can incorporate daily exercises into our schedules, we will soon be able to get rid of diabetes. Do you know what the link between diabetes and obesity is?

Normally, after we have a meal, our blood glucose level automatically rises a bit. Insulin's job is to control this glucose level by taking away the excess glucose from our blood and use it for energy production. Obesity makes our muscles resistant or insensitive to insulin. Once our muscles become insulin-resistant; then insulin is unable to control our blood sugar levels, and obviously, this is what causes diabetes. Do we have the ability to control our blood sugar levels? Sure. If we eat moderately, and spend thirty minutes or an hour in doing some physical exercises, we will be able to improve our situation by a good margin. Moderate eating doesn't mean that you have to eat a diet which is low in carbohydrate and rich in fat and protein. In fact, a good diet should have all the three elements - carbohydrates, proteins and fat in proper balance. These three elements serve different purposes inside our bodies; hence we cannot do without one or the other. For example, proteins serve the purpose of giving us satiety. If we don't get eat protein, we will feel hungry all the time. Carbohydrates serve the purpose of producing the energy needed to run our bodies, while fats provide us with a healthy skin and produce steroid hormones.

In the second part of this article, I will tell you about three magic diabetes healing foods which will give you all the necessary nutrition. In order to access the second part, simply click on the link in my resource box below.

Greens Are Great Healing Foods

This is a good article I'm sharing..

Greens are Great Healing Foods

Organic greens have been called some of the most healing foods on our planet*. Cereal grasses, especially, like oat grass, barley grass and wheat grass, contain every known vitamin, mineral, amino acid and enzyme necessary to sustain life. This includes minerals like calcium and magnesium that can help the body stay alkaline. They are also a great source of chlorophyll, which can help purify and build blood*.

Chlorella too is a green that can be very healing*. It helps the body detoxify, especially of heavy metals, like the cereal grasses do, and also has great antioxidant power*. Chlorella can also help stimulate your immune system and is good for the intestines.* For example, research shows that chlorella stimulates the growth of the good bacteria and absorbs toxic substances in the intestines.* Chlorella is full of many vitamins and minerals, including the powerful antioxidant, lipoic acid.

Greens including chlorella, if grown in the right soil, are rich in minerals and can hence be helpful along with coral calcium in bringing the body's pH back into a more alkaline range.

Grasses Can Repair Damaged DNA!

Grasses also seem to be an excellent intracellular DNA repair agent. This is important since we are all exposed to so many chemicals which can cause DNA damage, which in turn can lead to cancer. Cereal grasses can prove to be powerful agents to help restore and rejuvenate damaged DNA. In order to have all these benefits, you need to look for grasses that have not been burned or frozen, and that contain the whole grass, not just the juice. Adding lots of leafy greens to your diet, such as spinach, kale, collard and mustard greens can also be a good idea. But if you don't like or don't take the time or effort to eat organic leafy greens that come from rich soil two or three times per day, you might want to consider a good greens supplement.

Greens From the US Probably Contaminated, Even if Organic

In addition, most greens you buy in the United States come from grasses grown in the US. This can be a problem because our water supplies contain high levels of pesticide residues and contaminants, so even organically grown grasses in the US often end up contaminated. Our top soils are also in bad shape from years of chemical-based farming, and even if grown organically, it can take years for land to return to its pristine, healthy state. In addition, many grass or green mixes today add so-called natural flavors which is just another word for toxic MSG that can damage brain cells, and/or some kind of refined or artificial sugar, such as maltodextrin. This may make your greens taste better, but it will over time adversely affect your health. You can always take your greens in capsule form or mix the powder with juice at home if you need something to make it more palatable.

Ten Healing Foods Used in Chinese Herbal Medicine

This is a good article I'm sharing..

When we think about Chinese medicine, most of us immediately think of acupuncture, however, the use of herbs in healing is a cornerstone of Chinese medicine, too. The theory behind herbal medicine is that each herb exerts several different effects on the body through its inherent temperature, actions, and the organ(s) that it affects.

Like herbs, foods also have healing properties. However, some foods have stronger actions on the body and are in fact considered herbs as well as foods. Among them:

Ginger is best known for its ability to settle an upset stomach. Also considered a very warm herb, ginger can be combined with scallions in broth to fight off the early stages of a cold.

Walnuts have been getting the thumbs up lately as a good source of Omega 3 fatty acids. However, walnuts are also used in Chinese herbal formulas and in food therapy to moisten the intestines and relieve constipation. Walnuts are also considered a good tonic for the Chinese Kidney - think longevity.

Watermelon is a food you often crave on a hot, humid day, and for good reason. Watermelon is cooling and moistening, and is used in Chinese medicine for a condition called Summerheat, which is that blah nauseous feeling you get when it's really hot and sticky out.

Mung beans are also good for Summerheat. Boil the mung beans until they are soft and drink the water they were cooked in. If that sounds gross, just add a little broth, seasoning and some vegetables, and make it into a soup.

Cinnamon is warm and gets your energy moving. It's good if you have a cold with lots of aches and pains.

Scallions are also warming and dispersing (moving). They are most commonly used in the early stages of a cold boiled with ginger. Drink the broth and go to bed - these herbs are used to cause a mild sweat, which can diffuse a cold before it gets too severe.

Hawthorne fruit can be found in Asian markets, as a supplement, or as a sour candy called Hawflakes. Hawthorne is good for something called food stagnation in Chinese medicine, which is similar to indigestion.

Garlic is known to kill parasites. It's used as a flu preventative in Chinese medicine, as well as for food toxicity (food poisoning), with symptoms such as diarrhea and dysentery.

Chinese dates are great to tonify the Chinese Spleen. Signs of a Spleen weakness include shortness of breath, fatigue, poor appetite, lack of energy. Chinese dates can also be found in Asian markets and some health food stores. They can be eaten alone or added to salads and other dishes.

In the last couple of years, Goji berries have gotten a lot of attention as a food for health and longevity. Also known as Chinese Wolfberries, Goji berries are red, sweet and sour, and can be eaten or added to foods like raisins. In Chinese herbal medicine Goji berries are used for eye problems like blurred vision and diminished eyesight due to aging. Eating Goji berries for longevity wouldn't be wrong, as they also benefit the Chinese Kidneys, which are associated with aging.
